Assessment and treatment approach for jaw joint pain, teeth grinding and related complaints.
What are jaw joint problems?
Symptoms can include pain in the jaw joint, clicking sounds, limited opening of the mouth or a tired jaw in the mornings. These complaints may be linked to teeth grinding (bruxism), stress or a bite problem.
Assessment
To understand the source of your complaint, jaw movements, muscle condition and bite are examined. Imaging is requested if needed. The treatment plan is based on the cause of the symptoms.
Treatment options
- Use of a night guard (occlusal splint)
- Muscle-relaxing exercises and habit changes
- Botox-assisted protection protocols where appropriate
- Tooth and bite adjustment when required
When should you come in?
If jaw pain has lasted several days, you have trouble opening your mouth or your jaw locks, book an appointment without waiting.
The information on this page is for general purposes only. The treatment that suits you is decided by your doctor after the examination.
